Annika and Pauline

Why and how does Pauline affect Annika’s destiny?

Pauline is one’s of Annika’s best friends in Vienna. Pauline’s grandfather is the book keeper of a book shop, so Pauline always reads books. Through reading Pauline learns a lot of knowledge and she always use the knowledge to save Annika from danger.


Pauline ‘s knowledge from the books helps save Annika from danger. Pauline joined the plan saving Annika from Grossenfluss. She learnt from the book about how a man let his wife hide in a harp. Pauline then explain the plan according to the book in details. Her knowledge helps save Annika more smoothly.

And she helps change the destiny of Annika from being a No.127 student in Grossenfluss. At the beginning of the story , Pauline is described as a girl who found it difficult to leave the bookshop on her own and she was frightened by the open spaces and strange people. But at the last chapter of The Star of Kazan, Pauline became a brave girl who went to look for the midwife the stranger on her own. The midewire had helped Edeltraut to give birth to Annika. And Pauline realized that the midwife was a disable person who couldn't talk or move hands. So Pauline noticed that the midwife was not be able to sign her name on the document that Edeltraut had shown to prove Annika’s identity : Edeltraut was not the real mother of Annika. It helped the Professors save Annika . And it changed the destiny of Annika because if Annika know Edeltraut is not her real mother, she will not follow Edeltraut to return to Spittal again to let Edeltraut have a chance to trap Annika again.

As a conclusion, Pauline helps Annika a lot. She helps her escape e from Edeltraut who is a liar. She also changes the destiny of Annika from being No.127 in Grossenfluss. Most importantly she helps her find her real mother and be content with her identify. The friendship between them is a strong one. As the saying, “A friend in need is a friend indeed. “ Pauline helps Annika when she is in need. So, it can be concluded that Pauline is a true friend of Annika. .

Questions

Containing a sub-plot which is the premise for the real "Star of Kazan", the book is beautifully written with Eva Ibbotson's classic style and passion. It takes a rather clichéd descriptions but they gives it new depths. Use some examples to elaborate your points of view on it.

A subplot is a secondary plot strand that is a supporting side story for any story or the main plot. Subplots may connect to main plots, in either time and place or in thematic significance. Subplots often involve supporting characters, those besides the main characters in the story.

An old lady who Annika befriended in the last days of her life leaves the girl a trunk of imitation jewels but they never arrive. Having made friends with Zed, a half-gypsy servant boy, the two of them find the trunk on a beach and the twists of the story start to unfold.
