Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a neurological condition most characterized by Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS), in which a person falls asleep during the day at inappropriate times, such as at work or school. A narcoleptic will most probably experience disturbed nocturnal sleep, which is often confused with insomnia, and disorder of REM or rapid eye movement sleep. It is one of the dyssomnias. A narcoleptic may also fall asleep at random.

Narcolepsy is characterised by sudden and uncontrollable attacks of sleep at irregular and unexpected times. Attacks may occur in the middle of a conversation or during a meal and can last minutes or hours.

Literature Question and Answer

Hattie ordered Ella to give her her mother's necklace. She wanted the necklace because she thought it was beautiful. She also liked to own the necklace that was highly treasured by Ella. Ella was very sad about losing the necklace that was one of the memories for her mother who had just died. This shows that Hattie was greedy and inconsiderate.

Comprehension - Healthy weight loss

I believe that it is time for some plain common sense about losing weight.

Being overweight is serious and it is an increasing problem, especially for children. It is destroying their health and, in some cases, causing great unhappiness.

Weight loss can be so simple but you shouldn't expect it to happen quickly. Research has shown how unhealthy it is for your weight to go up and down as it often does when people follow crash diets.

It makes me angry to see the amount of time and money people waste on expensive weight loss treatments and programmes. What is even more worrying is that so many people are putting their health at risk with some of these fad crash diets, especially those that do not allow food from some of the important food groups.

There are only two simple rules to follow to lose weight or to maintain a healthy weight. They are to eat a balanced diet with less fat and sugar and to exercise more.

You don't have to starve to lose weight. If you eat fewer sweets things like lollies, cakes and biscuits, eat more fruit and vegetables, drink water instead of soft drinks and juices, and reduce facts by eating less fried food, you will lose weight and be healthier.

You don't need to pay a lot of money to join a gym or buy expensive equipment. Exercise should be part of your everyday life, like walking or cycling instead of going by car. Your need to be active instead of watching TV or sitting at a computer. Start some organized activity you'll keep up because you enjoy it.

It is important that you continue with your lifestyle changes, not just for a few days, weeks or months. Of course, sometimes you will eat the wrong food and that is fine as long as it only happens occasionally and you normally eat, drink and exercise wisely.

It really shouldn't be too complicated, difficult or expensive to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. You just need to be patient and makes some changes to your life. If you do, you can be healthier and have a much better future without spending a lot of money and making a lot other people very rich.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet, knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Ella Enchanted

The 1998 Newbery Honor Book, Ella Enchanted, is the funny and charming story of a girl who receives a most unfortunate "gift" of complete obedience. The interesting characters and events can be seen in the inventive and humorous award-winning novel by Gail Carson Levine.

11 Discussion Points

1. When she started writing this novel, Gail Carson Levine wanted to base her story on Cinderella but didn't want Ella to be a "goody two-shoes." So Levine created the obedience "gift," which forces Ella to be good. Identify additional differences and similarities between Ella Enchanted and the classic fairy tale Cinderella

A:Like Cinderella, Ella Enchanted is also a fairy tale. In the Cinderella tale, the fairy did not come out at the beginning; but the fairy appears at the beginning of the story, Ella Enchanted. However, both stories develop the plots through mystery power help to solve problems for the main characters of the stories.

The blessing curse made by the fairy in Ella Enchanted was clearly told in the beginning of the story but not in Cinderella tale. However, both girls have the same personality, i.e. they are obedient to the people around them.

2. Ella's father tries to set up a marriage for her with a man who is much older. How are marriages arranged in Frell? Do people marry for love or other reasons? How are marriage customs in Frell like and unlike modern marriage customs in our society?

It was not good for Ella's father to arrange a marriage for Ella, because the man was rich. Nowadays, people usually marry for love. But there are women who also marry for money.

3. What kind of relationship does Ella have with her father? Do you feel he is wrong to try and marry her off to a wealthy man or to leave Ella alone with Dame Olga and her daughters? How is Ella's relationship with her father different from the relationship she had with her mother? Do you think Ella takes more after her mother or her father? Explain why

A:The relationship of Ella and his father is not too good, because her father did not care of Ella. But the relationship of Ella and her mother is very good because her mother really care of her . I think Ella takes more of her after mother than her father.

4. What is the difference between small and big magic? Give some examples of both. Why is Mandy so reluctant to cast big magic? Why does she rarely tell people that she is a fairy?

Small magic is not harmful to people, it doesn't affect them. Big magic is usually harmful. For example, when Mandy broke the dish, the broken pieces of the rubbish went into bin without human hand putting them into the bin. However, the big magic, such as a curse made on another person could cause a bad result on the person, so it was harmful. Mandy gave an example, using a big magic, she could cause a flood and people would be killed.

5. What does it mean that Ella is in a line of women who are "Friends of Fairies" (page 25)? Are there instances in the story when Ella demonstrates her "fairy blood" and performs some magic of her own?

According to Mandy, all the Eleanor line are friends of the fairies. So, Ella had fairy blood in her.

6. While at finishing school Hattie orders that Ella discontinue her friendship with Areida, her only friend. After Hattie's command is issued, Ella proclaims, "In all the times I'd imagined the miseries she could inflict on me, I'd never imagined this. I'd thought of injuries, and I'd imagined terrible embarrassment, but I'd never thought of this kind of hurt" (page 81). How is the hurt she feels at ending her friendship with Areida similar to the conflict she feels at the prospect of marrying Char? How is this curse of obedience potentially dangerous to everyone she loves or befriends?

7. Why do you think Ella is finally able to break her curse of obedience when she initially refuses to marry Char? What does Ella mean when upon breaking the curse she says, "In that moment I found a power beyond any I'd had before, a will and a determination I would never have needed if not for Lucinda, a fortitude I hadn't been able to find for a lesser cause. And I found my voice" (page 226)?

8. Do you think Lucinda finally learns the damaging effects of big magic by the end of the novel? Why or why not?

9. Lucinda's spells don't always work as she intends them. Ella's father does not transform into a loving person after he is cast into eternal love with Dame Olga and Ella finds ways to make mischief despite her obedience spell. What difference is there between choosing to do good and being forced into it?

10. How does Ella's knack for learning languages help her in social situations? What effect does she have when she speaks or attempts to speak to others in their native tongue?

11. Why does Ella attend the three balls that the king throws for Prince Charmont and risk getting caught by her stepfamily and by the prince himself?
