Pauline is one’s of Annika’s best friends in Vienna. Pauline’s grandfather is the book keeper of a book shop, so Pauline always reads books. Through reading Pauline learns a lot of knowledge and she always use the knowledge to save Annika from danger.

Pauline ‘s knowledge from the books helps save Annika from danger. Pauline joined the plan saving Annika from Grossenfluss. She learnt from the book about how a man let his wife hide in a harp. Pauline then explain the plan according to the book in details. Her knowledge helps save Annika more smoothly.

And she helps change the destiny of Annika from being a No.127 student in Grossenfluss. At the beginning of the story , Pauline is described as a girl who found it difficult to leave the bookshop on her own and she was frightened by the open spaces and strange people. But at the last chapter of The Star of Kazan, Pauline became a brave girl who went to look for the midwife the stranger on her own. The midewire had helped Edeltraut to give birth to Annika. And Pauline realized that the midwife was a disable person who couldn't talk or move hands. So Pauline noticed that the midwife was not be able to sign her name on the document that Edeltraut had shown to prove Annika’s identity : Edeltraut was not the real mother of Annika. It helped the Professors save Annika . And it changed the destiny of Annika because if Annika know Edeltraut is not her real mother, she will not follow Edeltraut to return to Spittal again to let Edeltraut have a chance to trap Annika again.

As a conclusion, Pauline helps Annika a lot. She helps her escape e from Edeltraut who is a liar. She also changes the destiny of Annika from being No.127 in Grossenfluss. Most importantly she helps her find her real mother and be content with her identify. The friendship between them is a strong one. Questions

Containing a sub-plot which is the premise for the real "Star of Kazan", the book is beautifully written with Eva Ibbotson's classic style and passion. It takes a rather clichéd descriptions but they gives it new depths. Use some examples to elaborate your points of view on it.

A subplot is a secondary plot strand that is a supporting side story for any story or the main plot. Subplots may connect to main plots, in either time and place or in thematic significance. Subplots often involve supporting characters, those besides the main characters in the story.

An old lady who Annika befriended in the last days of her life leaves the girl a trunk of imitation jewels but they never arrive. Having made friends with Zed, a half-gypsy servant boy, the two of them find the trunk on a beach and the twists of the story start to unfold.

1. Although the heroine is a girl and there is a tiny hint of romance here, this is suitably intriguing有魅力地to work as a story that would appeal to both boys and girls. Why?
Who do you think Annika is more fond of: Stefan or Zed?

2. Why and how does Pauline affect the destiny of Annika?

Letter to Editor

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my view the protection of environment the responsibility of individuals or of the Government.

I think that the responsibility is of both individuals and the government. As for the government, I think they have taken enough responsibility for protecting the environment. They have law and policy to prohibit littering and spitting in the public. They also have educated the public about protection of environment as individual responsibility. We are required to bring our own bags when we go shopping. This helps decrease the use of plastic bags.

For individuals, we have the responsibility too. We can help save water, energy, and even electricity. We also recycle papers, furniture, even some disposed items. This must be done individually.

If the government and individuals can co-operate with each other, the protection of environment will be much better. I hope my view will help us know more about the individual responsibility in protecting environment.

Yours faithfully
Coco Lin

Letter of advice

_____________________
Dear Coco

Can you give me some advice?
My parents are very strict and never let me go out in the evenings. They are worried I will get into trouble. My other friends are allowed to go out. I really want to spend time with my friends. But, I don't know how to persuade my parents to let me out, especially in the weekends.

I am worried that if I keep obeying them I will lose my friends. What do you think I should do?

Yours
Coco

Dear Coco,
I am sorry to hear about the problem between you and your parents.

I think that you need to understand your parent’s thought. Why they didn’t let you go out in the evenings is because they want to protect you. You may think that it is a usual thing to go out with friends. But from the view of your parents, they may think that going out in the evenings is somehow not an obedient behavior. A good teenage would usually go home after school.

My suggestion is you ought to sit down and talk with your parents. You should explain why you need to go out in the evening. It is because you want to have a better friendship with your friends. Your friend’s parent also let them to go out in the evenings.

You ought to know that if you do not go out with your friends, you won’t lose your friend. If your friends do not play with you anymore because you do not go out with them in the evening, they are not your true friend.

I hope my suggestion will help you. Write soon and let me know what is going on.

Yours
Coco

Plot Summary of The Star of Kazan
"Abandoned at birth, 12-year-old Annika has been raised as a servant in the Viennese home of three quirky--but loveable—professors (Emil, Gertrude, and Julius). Annika has two best friends (Stefan and Pauline), adores her surrogate mothers, Ellie (the cook) and Sigrid (the housemaid), and cultivates a special friendship with an elderly neighbor (La Rondine). Although these relationships bring Annika much happiness, she nevertheless secretly longs to be reunited with her birth mother.

One day, Annika's pie-in-the-sky dream comes true: a finely dressed woman arrives with legal documents which declare that Annika is not only her long-lost daughter, but a member of a wealthy, noble-blooded German family to boot. Frau Edeltraut von Tannenberg whisks Annika off to Spittal, a sprawling estate in northeastern Germany. As Annika attempts to adjust to life as an aristocrat, she befriends the stable-boy (Zed) and Spittal's prize stallion, Rocco.

It isn't long before Annika senses that something about Spittal is not quite right. The mansion is enormous—but decaying; the von Tannenberg family is glamorous and noble—but secretive. Annika soon discovers that the von Tannenburg fortune has been gambled away, but her new mother assures her that she has “a plan.” Frau Edeltraut departs on a few mysterious “business trips,” returning with a generous inheritance from a distant relative that ensures a future of leisure and luxury for the von Tannenberg family.

But when Frau Edeltraut ships Annika off to a miserably strict boarding school, Zed suspects that there is more to the von Tannenberg legacy than meets the eye. He bravely rides to Austria on horseback and discloses his suspicions to Annika's Viennese family. As Zed explains, there is reason to believe that Frau Edeltraut has intercepted a trunk of valuable jewels recently bequeathed to Annika by La Rondine.

At Zed's urging, the professors, Ellie, and Stefan travel to Germany and smuggle Annika out of the boarding school. Upon their return to Vienna, Pauline uncovers evidence that Frau Edeltraut is not Annika's birth mother, but merely a selfish woman so desperate to save her family's impoverished estate that she took advantage of an orphan girl's good fortune. In recounting this saga, Ibbotson subtly suggests that a family has more to do with love and genuine affection than bloodlines or lineage. As Annika learns, the family she longs for is, in actuality, the family she already has.
